Policy

The Management of Hazrat Bilal Masjid (HBM) warmly welcomes and wishes to congratulate prospective couples who wish to marry in accordance with Islamic law (Nikah). 

The appointed Head Imam of the Hazrat Bilal Masjid , Shaykh Malik Asim Khan, performs all Nikah ceremonies which take place in conjunction with the Hazrat Bilal Masjid. 

A Nikah is not recognised as a valid marriage under English law. We will require a copy of your civil marriage certificate before we perform your Nikkah ceremony.  

Please see the Important Notes below. 

The following provides a brief overview of the HBM Nikah booking process. 

1. Booking Form.  We recommend that bookings are made at least three weeks prior to the planned date. To make a booking, either:

a. Complete the Nikah Booking form and hand the signed form to the Imam or Masjid Manager 

b. Alternatively, you can telephone the Mosque manager on Tel : 07453 359 320. He will complete the Booking form on your behalf and address any queries you may have. Please leave a message if he is not available. 

2. Booking Fee. These can be paid on the day of the Nikah by agreement with the Imam/chair. A full receipt will be provided for all payments made. The receipt is to be provided by the person authorised by the Mosque to accept payment (either the Imam or Committee member).

3. First meeting with the Imam. Whilst not compulsory, we encourage that the parties to the marriage and/or members of the respective families meet with the appointed Imam, at a mutually agreed time prior to the day of the ceremony. The purpose of this meeting is for a general discussion with the Imam, which may include the Islamic obligations pertinent to marriage and the couple’s personal circumstances. All such discussion will be carried out in confidentiality with the Imam. 

4. Documents required.  Certificate of your civil Marriage & identification papers e.g.  Passport and one other I.D to confirm your address.  We advise these are brought to the first meeting, or otherwise on the agreed date of the Nikah ceremony. Originals must be brought together with a clear photocopy for each, to be retained by Hazrat Bilal Masjid. 

5. Venue: The Nikah can be typically accommodated in within the Masjid (Maximum 50 Guests Men/Women included). Should you require a larger room or hall, this can be privately hired elsewhere. All persons attending the ceremony are kindly requested to observe the Islamic tradition of dressing in keeping with Islamic values. The management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone who does not comply with this request. NO HOT FOOD is to be served inside the Masjid. ONLY Celebratory sweets or hand snacks maybe distributed; however, the Masjid must be left clean and tidy. 

Upon request and subject to his availability, the Imam of the Masjid can also perform Nikah ceremonies at an alternative venue (i.e. avoiding the congregational prayer times).. Your booking includes 1 hour only of the Imams time.   Additional charges for his time / travel are applicable

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The Hazrat Bilal Masjid is not registered to solemnise marriages in accordance with English law. A Nikah which is performed in the UK is not considered a valid marriage under English law and as such provides no enforceable legal marital rights. This is important to note particularly in instances of marriage breakdown or death.  For this reason, we require all our community to ensure a civil marriage is conducted in a registry office in accordance with English law and that this is carried out before the Nikah ceremony to preserve the enforceable rights of both parties.
